The National Association of Home Builders offers Advanced Certifications for Remodelers - A Graduate Master Remodeler & Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist.

The Graduate Master Remodeler Certification

The National Association of Home Builders offers the Graduate Master Remodeler (GMR) designation which is held by only a select group of building industry professionals. Applicants must have at least 15 years of remodeling experience before they are even eligible to be considered for the prestigious remodeling designation.

Homeowners seek Graduate Master Remodelers because they know that these are remodelers who are experienced (15 years or more) and know how to run a successful business, keep up with current design and style trends, plus have building management skills and listen well to their clients. It’s the highest level of certification offered by the NAHB for remodelers in the United States.

The NAHB’s Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist

The Baby Boom generation has many choices on where to live but overwhelmingly, mature adults prefer to stay in their own homes. 87% of seniors plan on aging in their existing homes versus choosing other options like assisted living facilities, nursing homes or moving in with a loved one.

”Aging in Place” is an official term defined by the CDC as “the ability to live in one’s own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably regardless of income or ability level.” Aging-in-Place allows individuals the ability to retain a sense of independence and ownership well into retirement. It also saves on the expense of a long-term care facility.

Remodeling Homes for Mature Adults.

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) recognizes this trend and has a special certification process and curriculum for remodeling experts called Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist. The NAHB’s Designation enhances a remodeler’s knowledge - so they can assist mature adults who want to age in place. The Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist remodeling designation (CAPS) teaches the technical, business management and customer service skills which are essential in the fastest growing segment of the residential remodeling industry - home modifications for mature adults that would like to age in place. It also includes modifications for disabled residents and those with health challenges.

Home Modifications and Additions for Aging Adults

After 65 years, falling is the major cause of death, so home modifications are very important. Some ”Aging in Place” home modifications and additions include - a ramp or walkway to the front or back door, enlarged doorways for wheelchairs, installing lever-style door knobs, handlebars in the bathroom near the toilet, shower and bathtub, showers that are easily accessible with a bench for sitting along with special non-slip floor mats, adjusting kitchen countertops, replace flooring with slip-resistant material that’s smooth and works well with wheelchairs, install a chair lift or elevator to the second floor, home security that's easy to operate along with a panic button, and ample lighting that turns on automatically during the darker hours.
